“You’ve got worry on your face. I used to have worry.
Not now. Not anymore. All in the quiet now.
I sit and I don’t wait.“
by Elise Hearst
What won’t Anya do to get away from her dirty, dirty land? There is a burnt patch of grass in the middle of town that won’t grow back. Half the town is hiding a secret. The other half is missing.
A dark, adult fairytale. A haunting and subversive examination of the will to survive. Welcome to Dirtyland. Sharp, atmospheric and rebelliously comic, Dirtyland is a world with heart, plenty of guts and a fair bit of rock and roll. Dirtyland was developed as part of PlayWriting Australia’s National Play Festival in 2009 and was presented as part of the New Theatre’s inaugral Spare Room program 14 April – 7 May 2011.
“Here’s a play that gives you something to chew over, like a good wine that leaves something on the back-palate… Dirtyland gives you a meaty main course, cooked just so, while you’re in the theatre, and a substantial doggy-bag of thoughts, feelings and internal debates, to go.” Crikey
